Idea for Writing Assignment

You know students are more engaged and do better work if they have an audience and purpose. A writing assignment that my students always enjoyed that brought out their best efforts was: “tell about a teacher or parent who touched your life”.

Here’s a chance for your students to write about that topic and publish their essay on the internet on a safe and legitimate site, www.readinganswers.com (http://www.readinganswers.com). Spotlight on Success is a section on this site that is devoted to honoring parents and teachers who have changed students’ lives through exemplary teaching.

It’s simple for your students to submit a nomination by following these directions:
1. Go to the home page of Reading Answers (http://www.readinganswers.com).
2. Look in the right hand column, Spotlight on Success. Under”People who have made a Difference”, click on heading Nomination Form.
3. Students should fill out the requested information and then write their tribute (250 words or less). Students may either type right on the form, or copy and paste from a word document.
4. The last step is to upload a photo of their nominee and save their work.

We want to spotlight as many deserving teachers and parents as possible. This assignment will give your students the chance to be published, but also to thank someone who believed in them and gave them the confidence to learn. We look forward to reading about some of the extraordinary people who impact our young learners.
